There is SO MUCH MUSIC out there – we’ll never discover it all on our own. That is why I love it when students bring song requests to their music lessons. Despite being a big ol’ hit for Silk Sonic, “Leave The Door Open” was not on my radar until one of my bass students requested to study it during lessons – and boy, am I glad he did! What a cool tune and fun, fun bass part to play.
The bass transcription sheet music / tab that I am using in the video above is by Zulhilmy Zulkifli and is available for purchase on Sheet Music Plus at the following link:
Multi-Grammy-Award-Winning songwriter and producer Christopher Brody Brown is not only a songwriter on this tune, but is also credited with playing bass on the recording.
As I am a big fan of “backwards chaining” / “chunking” – a practice technique where you start from the end of the song and learn it chunk by chunk until you back up to the beginning of the song – I dive right into the last four measures of the outro in the video above. In this 13-minute video lesson you can learn about:
- Quarter notes, eighth notes, eighth rests, dotted eighth notes, and sixteenth notes
- Counting beats and subdividing at the 16th note level
- The parts of each beat (“1”, “e”, “+”, “a”)
- Practice Loops (practice technique)
- Backwards Chaining (practice technique)
- And much more!
